Nose & Nasal Cavity: -nose is only external portion of respiratory system and functions in providing airway, moistening/warming air, and filters/clean air
-nasal cavity is posterior to external nose, divided by nasal septum
^also contains nasal vestibule which is nasal cavity superior to nostrils, and is lined up with vibrissae (hair)
Paranasal sinuses: -forms rings around nasal cavity and is located in the frontal, sphenoid, ethmoid, & maxillary bones
-The paranasal sinuses helps lighten skulls, secrete mucus, and help warm and moisten the air
Pharynx: -funnel-shape tube that starts from base to vertebra C6, it helps connect nasal cavity and mouth to the larynx and esophagus
-there are three regions:
nasopharynx: air passage posterior of nasal cavity, soft palate and uvula close during swallowing, pharyngeal tonsils located on posterior walls
oropharynx: food & air passage from soft palate to epiglottis, palatine tonsils located in lateral walls of fauces, lingual tonsils located posterior to tongue
larynopharynx: food & air passage, posterior to upright epiglottis, extends to larynx and continues with esophagus
