Sickle Cell Disease

Cure
The cure is a bone marrow transplant from compatible siblings. This compatibility only occurs in about 18% of sickle cell disease cases.

A blood test can determine if Sickle Cell disease is present. More than 40 states test this in routine newborn blood draws.
A test can be done on unborn babies. During pregnancy, fluid is taken from around the baby and tested for the sickle cell gene or if the baby has the disease.
Parents who have the gene and are using invitro fertilization can test the embryos for the defective gene implantation and can choose to only implant embryos without the sickle cell gene

Treatments
Antibiotics, pain management and blood transfusions. An anti-tumor drug, hydroxyurea, "appears to stimulate the production of fetal hemoglobin, a type of hemoglobin usually found only in newborns. Fetal hemoglobin helps prevent the "sickling" of red blood cells. Patients treated with hydroxyurea also have fewer attacks of acute chest syndrome and need fewer blood transfusions."
