Edward VI Religion & Society
Religious changes
Three main changes:
Structural change under HVIII for royal supremacy, few doctrinal changes.
Some protestants (e.g. Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London) but many Catholics remain.
Firm swing to protestantism, especially after Northumberland ascends to power.
Under Edward VI:
In the 6 years that Edward was on the throne religion in England changed dramatically and became truly Protestant. Between Cranmer, Edward, Somerset and Northumberland the established doctrine of the Church and liturgy were controlled along with attempts to destroy wider community practices that enabled Catholicism. Although the Church was changed from the centre, it is less clear how far beliefs of the laity changed.
3 phases of the Reformation under Edward:
Destruction of Catholic beliefs and practices. [Somerset]
A period of limbo. [Somerset]
The establishment of Protestantism. [Northumberland]

Economic Problems
By 1547 England was poor due to inflation/war expenditure - High unemployment (growing population + greater enclosure. Also a decline in the 1540's for English cloth exports)
Both Somerset and Northumberland attempted to resolve: 1) Somerset's proclamation against enclosure and tax on sheep (only harmed small farmers
2) Debasement of the coinage further inflation.
3) Northumberland commission to improve royal financial admin (took time to take effect).
