What is a VPN?
A
Virtual Private Network or VPN
is just a method
used to access the internet.
When you connect to the internet using a VPN, you are using the VPN server’s internet connection. This allows the
VPN to set extra layers of security to keep your data safe.
Even if you are accessing the VPN on a public network, the
VPN encryption encodes your data to help prevent hacking
.
How is a VPN used in a business?
VPNs are regularly used by businesses as a security measure for remote workers.
When an employee works from home, they are connecting to the company through their home Internet Service Provider.
For businesses, that creates a lot of security holes for hackers to access their data. To prevent that, businesses will require employees to log in to the business servers through a Virtual Private Network.
This extra level of protection
protects the employee's data that is transmitted
over the internet as well as
blocking access to both the employee’s computer and the business's servers
.
Is it safe to use a VPN?
Hopefully, you know by now that n
othing is totally secure when it comes to internet technology
.
New ways of getting around security measures are always coming up
. In the case of a VPN, there are times when a
VPN does not offer full protection
.
For example,
when connecting to a VPN through public Wi-Fi, until you are connected to the VPN, you are just using public Wi-Fi
and that
means you are temporarily vulnerable.
However, this brief period is probably worth it if you need to do anything that requires you to enter Personal Identifiable Information.
What makes
public Wi-Fi unsafe
?
The fact that anyone can access the system means hackers can too. While it is convenient and helpful at times to have access to public Wi-Fi in places like airports or restaurants, it is important to take extra precautions.
For example, in a hotel where the password is easily available to anyone. Even though you are technically logging into a Wi-Fi system, in this case, the hacker can too.
Hackers may be able to “see” the data that you send, such as when you enter a password or credit card number on a website.
It is also
possible for malware and virus attacks to be launched over public Wi-Fi
. Use
precautions on any Wi-Fi
,
even one
that
requires a password
, if anyone can get access to the password.
These
open Wi-Fi networks are generally low security and provide little protection against cybercriminals.
