Identifying and Helping a Struggling Student

1. Get to know the student
STUDENTS
Learner profile
Talk to them
Create assignment to have them showcase themselves
Keep track of their likes/dislikes when it comes to assignments and projects
PARENTS
Essay about their child
Meet with them
Ask questions when you notice problems
Keep in contact
2. Recognize the Signs
Every student won't want to complete an assignment from time to time or may seem uninterested in something, but there may be an issue if you are seeing any of these signs on a regular basis (also check with parents to see if these things are happening at home):
Gets frustrated easily
Disengages
Lacks self-motivation
Can't stay on task
Takes longer than normal to finish tasks
Argues
Is anxious or stressed about homework
Unorganized and forgetful
Turns in incomplete homework
Makes frequent errors
Makes negative comments frequently

3. RTI and differentiation (Pre-Referral)
Explanation of RTI
https://youtu.be/S-y2v1a5XRU
RTI is a framework of learning that can be used to help students who are having learning difficulties. Teachers need to identify the area of concern, and then follow the pyramid tiers to add more and more help where needed. In the first level, all students are learning together. In the next tier, those students who are still struggling are put into small groups for some more directed instruction. This can happen in the classroom or be a pull-out situation. The third tier is one-on-one instruction with a student on a particular area of concern. If after trying all three tiers of RTI the student is still struggling, then a referral to SPED would be warrented.
MAKE SURE TO DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! THIS WILL MAKE IT EASIER WHEN IT COMES TO THE REFERRAL PROCESS.
Explanation of Differentiated Instruction
https://youtu.be/Z1Icdh25s90
Differentiated Instruction is NOT making a separate plan for each student. But it is recognizing that our students all get to the end result in different ways, and we can plan our teaching and assignments to allow for the student to use their own learning style to get to the end result.
Examples of differentiation I could use:
Small group activities
Different work stations
Choices of different projects to show knowledge at the end of units
Think-Pair-Share activities
Self-reflection
Open-ended projects
Technology
AND REMEMBER TO FREQUENTLY REFLECT ON YOUR STRATEGIES AND MAKE CHANGES WHERE NECESSARY!
4. SPED Referral and Testing
This video goes through the steps of gaining an IEP, and clearly defines the referral process and the evaluation or testing.

Things to remember:
Keep the parents informed and involved - they may be nervous and have lots of questions
Work closely with other teachers and school psychologist to help the student
Be patient because this process can be a waiting game
This is a great podcast with a school psychologist about what her job really is, and what myths are out there about her job!
