Emotions and understanding
Klara
QEC2
This already highlights the differences in perception and overall intelligence between a normal B2 like Rosa compared Klara in terms of understanding
The underlying emotions that they display that cannot be detected by normal AFs can be clearly perceived by Klara.
But Rosa missed so many signals. She would often
exclaim delightedly at a pair going by, and I would look and realize that even though a girl was smiling at her AF, she was in fact angry with him, and was perhaps at that very moment thinking cruel thoughts about him.
QEC1
Klara at the start of the book shows good insight into the existence of complex and mixed emotions early on, as this is important for her perceptions
This obviously connects back to the main idea as she is developing her understanding of complex emotions
I became puzzled, then increasingly fascinated by the more mysterious emotions passers-by would display in front of us.
QEC3
Although Klara cannot clearly identify the emotions, feelings, and meanings behind the interaction, we still see that she can realize the significance of the meeting between the two
This, therefore shows us the understanding of Klara
I still couldn’t see the Coffee Cup Lady’s face, but the man had his eyes tightly shut, and I wasn’t sure if he was very happy or very upset.
Mother

and the Mother turned fully our way. And for just one second, her piercing stare was no longer on Josie’s back, but on me, and I immediately looked away,
QEC2
I noticed too that when the Mother reached out to Josie from behind, the outstretched arm hesitated in the air, almost retracting, before coming forward to rest on her daughter’s shoulder.

Josie

She kept coming with her uncertain stride, and I thought she was about to embrace me, but she stopped at the last moment and looked up into my face.

QEC1
Josie has considered the emotions and thinking of an AF, which is rare. She also understands her confusion
‘Oh, don’t feel bad or anything, there’s no way you’d have seen me. I was like in a taxi, going by, not even that slow. But I saw you in your window, and that’s why I got Mom to stop today right here.’
