Sexual reproduction in humans
organs of male reproductive system
ducts- epididymis, sperm ducts or vas deferens, urethra.
Epididymis
Epididymis lies against each testicle in the scrotum.
It is tightly coiled tiny tube enclosed in a fibrous covering.
The sperms produced in the testes move first into the epididymis.
accessory reproductive organs: penis, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, Cowper's gland.
the main organ of male reproductive system : testes
Testes or testicles
Location of testes
The testes are located within a sac like structure called scrotum, present just outside the abdominal cavity.
The scrotum maintains the temperature of the testes slightly lower than the body temperature ( 2-3 degrees lower). The lowered temperature is necessary for the production of sperms.
Function of testes
The testes or testicles are a pair of organs that produce the male gametes or sperms.
they also produce the male sex hormone called testosterone.
Testosterone is the male hormone that s responsible for the development of male characteristics such as a beard, a muscular body and hoarseness of voice.
The testes have 200 - 300 compartments having seminiferous tubules. Sperms are produced inside them.
Sertoli cells present in the seminiferous tubules nourish and maintain the shape of the sperms.
Outside the seminiferous tubules, Leydig's or interstitial cells are present that produce testosterone.
