The Munich Putsch - Coggle Diagram
The Munich Putsch
Causes
Hyperinflation was affecting German people and unrest was high + Ruhr crisis = unrest - Hitler wants to exploit the time when governmental support is low
Nov 1923, NSDAP membership = 55k c- Hitler thinks he is strong enough to make a national challenge
Hitler knew Stresemann would soon solve Hyperinflation crisis so window of unrest was narrowing - he had to move fast
Stresemann had introduced laws against extremist communist groups and Hitler could feel that it was only a matter of time before his party was targeted
-
At the height of the Ruhr Crisis, Von Kahr had banned NSDAP meetings and Hitler felt he was being controlled and under pressure to act and assert his leadership
-
Events
On the evening of 8th November 1923, 3000 Bavarian officials met in the Bavarian government at Keller Beer Hall in Munich. 3 main speakers = Von Kahr, Von Seisser and Von Lossow
Hitler surrounded the building with 600 SA storm troopers and a machine gun was set up in the hall. Hitler appeared in the Hall and claimed that with the supported of Ludendorff (a national hero to some) that he would take control of the government
Kahr, Seisser and Lossow taken into a side room and made to agree at gun point to the revolution and then they were left to leave - mistake as they changed their minds and opposed Hitler. The 2000 strong SA was opposed by the Bavaria police and army
Hitler sent 3000 SA and supporters to capture key buildings such as the town centre but were met by State police - 100 at the town hall an the police opened fire which killed 16 Nazis and injured Hitler and Goering
Ludendorff was arrested and the others fled - 16 dead Nazis and 10 days later Hitler was arrested and sent to Landsberg Castle Prison
Consequences
Hitler arrested, put on trial and sent to Landsberg Castle Prison but the judge was a Nazi sympathiser and he was given the minimum sentence
-
Hitler used the trial to explain his views and gained popularity - as a result of the publicity, the NSDAP won its first seats in the Reichstag, 32 seats in the 1924 election
-
Hitler changed his approach and realised he had to gain political dominance not through military means - "The Reichstag Principle"
