ecotourism
what is it?
defined by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), it is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people and involves interpretation and education
-
involves visiting relatively undisturbed natural areas. its purpose is to help travelers better appreciate natural beauty and biodiversity
other aims include providing funds for ecological conservation, enabling tourism to directly benefit local communities involved in tourism and fostering respect for different cultures and lifestyles
-
benefits it brings
local community
economic
creates jobs locally and the need for young people to leave home to work in cities is reduced --> nearly everyone can participate in being a tour guide, selling/cooking food, providing accommodations, taking part in cultural performances, etc.
communities can consolidate their financial status due to entrance fees and program or accommodation costs
earnings are also stabilized since they have a diversified economy
for the local community who own an area in a particular destination, they can receive a portion of the entrance fees. they can also receive income from being employed as part of that tourism destination staff
eg. ecotourism to Waitomo Caves in New Zealand, where local Maori (indigenous people of New Zealand) can benefit directly from tourism
those who can't get involved in ecotourism activities can also profit due to the shared income in the community
infrastructure
new streets and schools can be built, as well as house centers, drinking water resources and electricity
