Matter
Compounds
Pure substance made up of two or more different elements that are combined chemically.
Most matter in the universe exists in the form of compounds
We have 50 million known compounds and new compounds continue to be developed and discovered at the rate of about 100,000 per year
The chemical symbols of the periodic table make it easy to write the formulas for chemical compounds
Elements
Pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical pr chemical means
There is over 90 naturally occurring elements and there are elements that have been developed by scientists
Each element has a unique name and symbol
The symbol consists of one, two, or three letters. The first one is always capitalized
Symbols are universally accepted by scientists in order to make the communication possible
Fajer Alhamlan
Mixtures
Combination of two or more pure substances in which each pure substance retains its individual chemical properties.
The composition of mixtures is variable and the numbers of mixtures that can be created in infinite
Two types
Homogenous mixture
Mixture that has constant composition throughout , always a single phase.
Example: Sea water and vinegar
Also called solutions, can be solids, liquids and gases
Heterogenous mixture
Mixture that does not blend smoothly throughout and in which the individual substances remain distinct
Example: Salad and fresh squeezed orange juice
