Personal Identifiable Information
is a
legal term
for any
data
that
can be used to identify a specific individual
.
SSN -
Social security numbers
are a common piece of Personal Identifiable Information because it
is a number assigned to only one person
.
As technology evolves and changes, new methods of identifying an individual have been created.
For example, an
IP address could be used to identify an individual
because
the IP address
is assigned to only one device
.
More recently,
fingerprints and facial images for unlocking devices
,
are PII
that can directly identify an individual.
COPPA
COPPA -
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act
was passed by Congress in 1998. Called COPPA, the rule designated the Federal Trade Commission as the government group to oversee children’s privacy online.
The goal of COPPA was
to give parents the ability to control what information is collected about their children
.
The main intent of the rule was
to protect children under the age of 13
.
This is the main reason social media apps require users to be 13 in order to create an account.
FERPA
FERPA -
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
was passed in 1974 and has been updated several times. FERPA is a federal law developed
to help parents protect their children’s privacy in education
.
The law requires that schools get written consent from parents before disclosing any personally identifiable information about a child
.
If a school fails to comply with FERPA it can risk losing federal funding.
Another aspect of the law is that
parents can request to see their child’s school record and ask for changes to be made if the information is incorrect
.
Keeping your SSN safe

It is required for school, college entrance, student loans, employment, banking, and home loans.
You will have a physical card that shows your name and SSN. Keep it in a safe place and do not carry it with you. Do not give out your SSN unless absolutely necessary.
Why PII important?
When hackers get ahold of someone’s banking information or credit card number, the fraud victim is usually able to fix the situation fairly quickly. The victim calls the bank, and the bank issues a new credit card with a new number and cancels the old card. Problem solved.
Personal Identifiable Information is much more critical
, however.
If someone gets access to your social security number, they can cause a lot of damage to your credit
without you finding out for years. And
changing a social security number is not just a quick phone call to your credit card company
.
