The relationship between nurse and patient can increase or decrease the quality of care provided in a healthcare environment (Molina-Mula & Gallo-Estrada, 2020), however this heavily relies on the level of communication and patient participation. Effective communication within this relationship can result in a reduction of days spent in hospital and positive outcomes of treatment (Stasik, 2020). To result in these types of outcome, the use of empathy is essential to gain a true understanding of the patients perspective, showing compassion, kindness and sincerity (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou (2014). While patient care remains the upmost priority within healthcare, professionals must abide by confidentiality laws (Gov.uk, 2003). This essay will explore the methods of communication implemented in a nurse patient relationship, the potential barriers which may arise when using these methods and the importance of empathy within this relationship. Additionally explaining the importance of confidentiality and the consequences of breaching confidentiality laws, outling the few circumstances where breaching confidentiality is acceptable.
