This studies main purpose will be to investigate how many people know of the negative side of social media, then it will further focus in on three main things. The first is how much time do they spend on social media per day and what social media outlets are they using. The second is will there be any difference in the SMAQ scores between the genders and the third is will self-esteem affect the SMAQ scores. This research has three main reasons as to why it is important, first social media addiction is still relatively new with limited research done on it so finding out how many people are aware of it and the problems that come with it will be beneficial for the future research. The second reason is that social media use is highly concentrated among the younger generation and in order to make sure they fulfil their academic potential. The third reason is simply because of the sheer quantity of social media users for example let’s take cigarettes as an example when they were first brought out they were deemed fine to smoke and there would be no adverse effects of using this product, then, later on, they found out that causes cancer and bronchitis. Smoking now kills 1.5 million people per year (HSE, 2019). Unlike smoking we can spread awareness to people to stop them from unknowingly harming their mental health but in order to do this we need as much information as possible which is why continued studies are so important.
