Raw Materials(depending on the type of raw materials they use)
Mineral based industries: These are primary industries and use mineral ores as raw materials.
Marine based industries: these use products from sea and oceans as raw materials.
Agro based industries: these use plant and animal based products as raw materials.
Forest based industries: these utilize forest produce as raw materials.
Size(depending upon the amount of capital invested, number of people employed and the volume of production).
Small Scale Industries: use lesser amount of capital and technology. Eg. Silk Weaving and Food Processing industries
Cottage Industries: Also known as household industries. Here, products are manufactured by hand, by the artisans.
Large Scale Industries: produce large volumes of products. Investment of capital is higher and the technology used is superior. Eg. Production of automobiles and heavy machinery.

State owned or Public sector Industries: owned and operated by the government. Eg. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Steel Authority of India Limited.
Joint sector Industries: owned and operated by the state and individuals or a group of individuals. Eg. Maruti Udyog Limited
Private sector Industries: owned and operated by individuals or a group of individuals. Eg. Reliance, Airtel
Cooperative Sector Industries: owned and operated by the producers or suppliers of raw materials, workers or both. Eg. Anand Milk Union Limited and Sudha Dairy.
