Causes of food shortages in a country
Conflict
Conflicts in the region exacerbate (是惡化) the damine and food insecurity triggered by drought
Removes people who does the job ( killed) or men taken to war leaving only women
Limits water and grazing space
Money used for development for farms will be used in war
Population growth
Low death rate and longer life expectancy
more people are needed to be fed, while the food source can't keep up
declining fertility rate ( less people farming )
more rural to urban and so the people who are dependent on agriculture increases
less land are available for farming
Shrinking land resources have not been compensated for by increases in land productivity
farmers have to cope with reduced productivity and less land from which to feed themselves and to supply food to the ever-expanding cities.
Poverty
Could not afford to buy
Make to sell and not giving enough to themselves
Natural hazards
drought and flood causes widespread periodic famine
locust(蝗蟲) swarms(蜂群)
They eat and damage crops
Low rainfall (less than 500mm)
live stock perished(dies)
e.g. Ethoiopia in 1984 drought affected 8.7 million people, about 1 million died and 1.5 million livestock perished
e.g. Sudan in 1984 8.5 million affected, 1 million died and 7 million livestock died
Flood: Disruption of road and rail transport, cuts in telecommunication and the breakdown of electricity and water supplies
destruction of crops, the drowning of animals and the siltation of reservoirs
