Democratic
"The factory system, automobile...,and of course nuclear power have all at one time been described as democratizing, liberating forces,"(pg 118). All of the technologies described offered workers greater freedom in one way or another, but critics today argue that they contribute to authoritarianism. It can therefore be argued that authoritarianism is the natural state of industrialized society given that, as mentioned in the previous reading, more complex systems are impossible to understand for people without the proper expertise, so institutions of specialized knowledge are required to keep these technologies functioning despite their prolific use in modern society.
