Forces - what do we know now?
Movement
Lift
Pull
Push
Slide
Rock
Twist
Roll
Glide
Bounce
Gravity
There is no gravity in space because you float around
Gravity makes you fall down when you jump
Experiment with balls - they all fell down but all bounced different heights
Floating and sinking
Some objects sank and some floated
Some heavy objects floated and some sank
It depends how much up thrust there is stopping the object sinking
Pushes and pulls
Pull: door, blind, swing back, tray out, mat across the floor, window closed, car, stringed toy
Push: door, chair, table, drawer, ball, pillow, pin into a board, somebody (but we know it's not kind)
Friction
Ramp experiment - we built ramps to make the car go down.
Different materials: Carpet, rug, table
Green rug: It stopped - lots of friction
Table: It went fast and a long distance - little friction
Friction stopped it from going far
Cardboard: The car did an acrobatic move because of the friction
We measured with a metre stick in cm - centimetres
Magnets
Magnetic and non magnetic
Some materials stuck to the magnet: whiteboards, chair leg
Some materials didn't stick to the magnet: ruler, red part of chair because it wasn't metal but plastic
We thought at first at that all materials were magnetic but we soon found out that they weren't
Metals that are magnetic: zinc, steel, zinc plate, nickel
Metals that are not magnetic: copper, aluminium, gold, silver
