Differential Achievement
Ethnicity
Language - Ethnic minority groups (particularly black/low income groups) lack linguistic development, use of slang and Ebonics
Asian Students - (Priyce 1979) Asian culture is more cohesive. theey ignore racism more effectively and are less affected by it = higher self esteem
Social Class
Cultural Capital - GCSE students who read complex fiction etc. & had graduate parents, develop wider vocabulary and achieved higher grades. This is usually middle class families.
Material Deprivation - SOme working class students are unable to afford certain necessities for school that may affect their achievement such as books, laptops, stationary etc.
Gender
Teacher Attention - Girls are more likely to be praised and given attention and therefore work harder and achieve higher
Positive Role models - aspires girls to be like them and to do so, they will work harder to be like these role models and achieve higher.
Decline in Male Traditional Jobs - Boys begin to become lost in their future aspirations fr careers and begin to not work as hard in school, as they do not have an aspiration or goal they ant to achieve

To introduce free market principles (more competition) into the education system to introduce greater parental choice and control over state education Raising standards in education. These are the aims associated with Neoliberalism and The New Right
Marketisation and Parentocracy (schools compete for pupils’ parents are like consumers) League Tables – so parents can see how well schools are doing and make a choice. OFSTED – to regulate and inspect schools.
