Marvelyn Breceda 6th period respiratory system - Coggle Diagram
Marvelyn Breceda 6th period respiratory system
major functions of the respiratory system :check:
breathing
external respiratory
ventilation
removes particles from incoming air, regulates temperature and water content of air
mucous membranes
transports incoming air to gas exchange areas
obtains oxygen
upper respiratory structures and functions :check:
the nose
nostrils provide openings for entrance/exit of air
nasal cavity
hollow space posterior to the nose
organs of the respiratory system
pharynx( throat)
space behind oral and nasal cavities and larynx
parnasal sinuses
air-filled space in maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, spheroid bones
lower respiratory structures and functions :check:
bronchial tree
consist of branched, mucous membrane -lined tubular airways, leading to trachea
tertiary brochi
branches of lobar bronchi; each enters a segment of a lung
Trachea (windpipe)
cylindrical tube extends downward anterior to the esophagus, into thoracic cavity
terminal bronchioles
branches off larger bronchioles; smallest brochioles that conduct air without
Layers of pleurae :check:
double-layered serous membrane
visceral pleura
inner layer, attched to surface of each lung
parietal pleurae
outer layer, lines thoracic cavity
serous fluid lubricates pleura cavity between 2 layers right lungs is larger than left
right lung has 3 lobes, left has 2 lobes
Compare and contrast the mechanism of inspiration and expiration :check:
expiration
from surface tension within alveoli
diaphragm and external intercostal muscles
results from passive process of elasticrecoil of the muscles and lungs
inspiration
atmosphere pressure excerted by the air on all objects
contact within; force moves air into lungs
pressure inside the lungs to decrease below aatmosphere
air moves from higher to lower pressure
Volume and Pressure relationships in thoracic cavity :check:
increase volume of thoracic cavity cause air pressure inside lungs
muscles expand thoracic cavity for normal inspiration
pressure
pressure inside lungs decrease below atmosphere
atmosphere pressure excreted by the air on all objects in contact with it.
Respiratory volumes and capacities :check:
tidal volume
study of various air volume that more into and out of lungs due to different degree
volume of air that enters or leaves the lungs during one respiratory cycle
average is 500~ml
Internal vs. external respiration :check:
sternum upward and outward
volume of air can be inhaled
external intercostals contract to move ribs and sternum upward
Disorders of the respiratory system :check:
obtains oxygen from atmosphere
movement of air into and out of lungs
divided into two portions
