James Case Study
Stages of Change
- Personal factors: James has already proven that he can incorporate exercise into his daily life -- he took walks by himself, did yoga weekly, and climbed Mt Clemens.
- Behavior: James actually enjoyed exercising and had enough motivation to continue to try exercising even after his favorite staffer left the assisted living facility. He continues to brag about climbing Mt Clemens.
In the SCT theory, all three components of behavior change need to work together. I think James still has two of the three components but is lacking the environment he needs to help motivate him to exercise.
- Environment: James' environment has changed. Once his favorite staffer left, no one else was willing to take him on hikes. He tried to exercise in the facility's gym but lost motivation when no one else would exercise with him and he slowly lost all interest in exercise.
Based on the TTM, he is in the precontemplation stage - he is not ready to take action int he foreseeable future.
Risk Factors
-
Risk of social isolation: James seems to need external motivation such as friends who will participate in physical activity with him and if he doesn't have that he is at risk of spending more time alone
Risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes: a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and CV diseases such as HTN, CAD, stroke, MI
SCT contributing factors
Self-efficacy: James does have the physical ability to exercise but it's unclear whether he still believes he can do it
Reinforcement: It is clear that James is proud of the fact that he climbed Mt Clemens and that can serve as positive reinforcement to get him to begin exercising again. Although he is currently lacking external reinforcement from peers.
Locus of control: Is James able to take control of his current situation and implement change? It seems he is lacking the ability to do this.
Behavior Change Strategy
I think James would benefit from the application of the Social Cognitive Theory to his current situation
Using the Social Cognitive Theory, James is actually closer to change than he appears to be. The Social Cognitive Theory states that it is a combination of personal factors, behavior, and environment that all contribute to a person's ability to create behavior change.
