Carbohydrates - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Single sugar unit (glucose, fructose or galactose).
        Cannot be broken down into simple sugar units.
        They are combined in certain ways to form complex carbohydrates.
    - - Are comprised of two monosaccharides bonded together.
        3 most common are:
        
        Sucrose, glucose bonded to fructose.
        
        Lactose, glucose bonded to galactose.
        Maltose, glucose bonded to glucose.
  - - - Polysaccharides are molecules made of many monosaccharides, their function depends on their structure.
        Mainly used for storing energy, sending cellular messages and providing support to other cells and tissues.
- - - - Production of macromolecules: glucose is converted into ribose and deoxyribose, used to build DNA, RNA and ATP.
        
        Sparing protein: when the body uses proteins to produce energy.
        
        Structure: carbohydrates are used to produce protective and structural components for living things, like cellulose, chitin and murein.
