Cardiovascular System- Katherine Contreras Period 6
Major components and functions of Blood
Layers of the heart
Myocardium
- (middle layer) pumps blood out of heart
chambers
Endocardium
-(inner layer) continuous with the endothelium of major vessels joining the heart
Epicardium
-(outer layer) decreases friction in the heart
Anatomy of the heart (chambers and valves)
Valves
atrioventricular (AV) valve
- one-way flow of
blood from atria to ventricle
right AV (tricuspid) valve
- one-way flow of
blood from atria to ventricle
left AV (bicuspid or mitral) valve
-have cusps to which chordae tendinae attach
semilunar valve
-blood is pumped
pulmonary semilunar
valve
-prevents backflow of blood into the right ventricle
aortic semilunar valve
- prevents
backflow of blood into the left ventricle
Chambers
2 upper chambers
(atria)
2 lower chambers
(ventricles)
ABO, Rh blood types
Major functions of the cardiovascular system
vital for supplying oxygen and
nutrients to tissues and removing wastes from them
transport blood away from the heart/ transport blood to the heart
picks up oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide
Vital signs (BP and Pulse)
Structural and functional differences between blood vessel types (arteries, veins,
capillaries)
Major blood vessels (names arteries and veins)
Disorders of the cardiovascular system
Cerebrovascular Accident (stroke)
- Blood flow to a portion of the brain that is interrupted
Endocarditis & Myocarditis
- Inflammation of the heart
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
- Arteries narrow/reduce blood flow to extremities
Congenital Heart Disease
- Issue with the hearts structure/ function present from birth
Myocardial Infraction (heart attack)
- Blood flow to part of heart that is blocked
Blood flow through the heart and body
Heart
continuous circle
Pulmonary circuit- Blood flow between heart and lungs
Two circuits
Systemic circuit- Blood flow between heart and body tissues
right atrium contracts, forcing blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle
left atrium pumps blood through the mitral (bicuspid) valve into the left ventricle
Body
Cardiac cycle and the ECG
