One of the chiefs died trying to make his way back to Indiana (his original home) from Kansas, Since he was such a big part of the tribe he has a monument at the University of Notre Dame

November 4th they had already traveled 660 miles in just two months. In just two months around 40 out of 850 people died.

September 4th the actual move to Kansas began. There were around 850 Potawatomi Indians with a trained army guard. Their were three chiefs who wouldn't leave, they were confined to cages on wheels.

August 5th was the Indians deadline to leave their land. Most Indians had already left but not Menominee and some other people.

The Potawatomi people signed 9 treaties practically selling their land in Indiana to the US government to try to earn money.

In 1830 Congress made it official by passing the Indian removal act. This gave President Andrew jackson permission to force the Indians westward.

Indiana finally became a state. The Miami and P tribe were the most numerous remaining tribes. The government was trying to urge the Indians into debt so they would pay it using their land.

The war of 1812 was between the United States and Great Britain. This war occurred because the British kept impressing the soldiers.
