The Evolution Of The Atomic Theory
Democritus 400 B.C.
First developed the theory that the universe is made of empty space and tiny particles called atoms
Dalton 1803
Dalton developed his atomic theory with 3 main points
The 3 things were
All matter is made of atoms
Atoms are indestructible and cannot be divided into smaller particles
All atoms of one element are exactly alike, but they are different from atoms of other elements
Thomson 1897
He discovered a negative charge in atoms with cathode-ray tubes
He found that atoms have electrons that are negative, and to balance it out, it they have positively charged protons
Rutherford 1911
He discovered the nucleus with his gold foil experiment because the alpha particles bounced off in weird ways
Bohr 1913
He theorized that electrons orbit the nucleus by using the different colors that different atoms produce when you zap them with electricity
Schrodinger 1926
He developed the current model of the atom that explains how electrons cannot be pinpointed to an exact location
