Lesson 5
Evaluation of articles
Systematic review
answers a defined research question by collecting and summarizing all empirical evidence that fits pre-specified eligibility criteria. Makes use of statistical methods to summarize the results of these studies. May combine results in meta-analysis when similar enough.
Meta-analysis
a quantitative, formal, epidemiological study design used to systematically assess the results of previous research to derive conclusions about that body of research
Advantages: Generalization, more reliable as it is a pooled analysis, variation between studies evened out and moderated, statistical testing of overall factors in related studies
Limitations: file-drawer effect (publication bias ->non-significant studies -> not published)
Peer review
a process where articles are written by experts and are reviewed by several other experts in the field before the release of the articles. Reliable sources of information.
