Bram Stoker's Dracula
Tone
The tone of the story starts of dark and mysterious. It gradually builds up with Jonathan's realization of being trapped in Dracula's castle.
His tone starts off curious in the beginning chapters and gradually begins to have a panic like tone, trying not to taking the wrong steps to ensure his survival.
"I soon lost sight and recollection of ghostly fears in the beauty of the scene as we drove along, although had I known the language, or rather languages, which my fellow-passengers were speaking, I might not have been able to throw them off so easily" (5).
"In no place save from the windows in the castle walls is there an available exit. The castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner!"
The tone of Jonathan in the first quote is quite normal sounding and not in danger, but the second quote is where he begins to panic, realizing his life is in danger
Points of View
Through the letters from different people throughout the story, we always get to see their perspective and their mentality.
"I have been working very hard lately, because I want to keep up with Jonathan's studies, and I have been practising shorthand very assiduously" (43).
"I love him. I am blushing as I write, for although I think he loves me, he has not told me so in words. But oh, Mina, I love him; I love him; I love him!" (44).
Just an example of reading the story of Dracula through these letters getting to see these 2 women have different things on their minds. Mina is serious and focused on supporting Jonatahn whilst Lucy is infatuated with Arthur.
Setting
The main place where the events involving Dracula take place are classic scenarios for any gothic story. Considering the story is about Dracula, it should be obvious to see a dark castle somewhere.
"The time seemed interminable as we swept on our way, now in almost compete darkness, for the rolling clouds obscured the moon" (11).
"In the courtyard of a vast ruined castle, from whose tall black windows came no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the moonlit sky" (11).
"1 August.-Two days of fog, and not a sail sighted" (66). "We seem to be drifting to some terrible doom" (66).
Jonathan Harker
Our main protagonist has gotten himself trapped in Dracula's castle and so far he's still alive. Jonathan's entrance to Transylvania is innocent but at times shows his naivety to danger.
"'It is the eve of St. George's Day. Do you not know that to-night, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full way? Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to?' She was in evident distress that I tried to comfort her, but without effect" (4).
"I shall not remain alone with them; I shall try to scale the castle wall farther than I have yet attempted. I shall take some of the gold with me, lest I want it later. I may find a way from this dreadful place" (41).
