"The culture system expects women to show greater acceptance of and commitment to, value systems of men"
-
Daughters are responsible to pick up the household chores while brother/frather sit and do nothing. Damned if you do damned if you don't
"Tell their sons to beat their wives for expecting their husbands help with the rearing of children and the housework, for wanting to be something other than a housewife"
Always being told to watch the way you dress in front of males even relatives because mothers told their daughters that men only want one thing, yet they critique their daughters for not conforming to men and what their husbands want from them
"Which was it to be- stronger or submissive, rebellious or conforming?"
Change is inevitable as long we stop comparing ourselves with others who are just as oppressed. " the possibilities are numerous once we decide to act and not react"
Constantly "acting" A part of who she is in certain spaces
" She learns to be Indian in a Mexican culture and she learns to be a Mexican in a anglo point of view. she learns to juggle culture"
The continuous divide between social groups begins with ourselves and our actions within our foundations of life
We need white America to accept their faults. Mass media projects of how bad minority groups are; white America fails to realize their projections reflect their own self " where their is persecution of minorities, there us a shadow of projection. Where there is violence and war their is repression of shadows"
We must imagine change and change our way of thinking in order to act upon those changes in our society
"Nothing happens in the 'real' world unless it first happens in the images of our minds
Many people from social groups immobilize woman of color/ suppression/ seen as prey. "Women does not feel safe when her own culture, and white culture, are critical of her; when the males of all races hunt her as prey"
Although being Mexican is something one can be proud of about its also terrifying because of the faults throughout the culture. "So, yes though ' home permeates every sinew and cartilage in my body, I too am afraid of going home"
Create new foundations because other cultural foundations have failed women
" And if going home has denied me then I will have to stand and claim my space, making a new culture- una culture mestiza- with my own lumber, my own bricks and mortar and my own feminist architecture."
Western culture views art for the upper class while tribal cultures view them as a sacred for everyone long with offerings and being apart of the experience
Ethnocentrism- What rids tribal arts of its power "ethnocentrism is the tyranny of the western aesthetics"
Whites/ Anglo cultures alone with others are known to take whats not theirs and rid the artifacts of its soul and spirits fromyhr original owners. Always looking for things they do not have never looking at the things they already have, the soil under their feet.
