When we go through traumatic experiences, they stay with us for long periods of time, sometimes even our entire lives. These experiences can be singular, or reoccurring, and the impact on our lives can vary. When regarding childhood-related trauma, it is important to acknowledge that during these important stages of our human development, victims can cary the issues of trust, fear, and helplessness into adulthood, suggesting more opportunities to grow the trauma.
There are many ways that indidivudals can learn to cope with their trauma, so it does not have a noticeable interference with their every day lives.
Methods of healing :<3:
- Try to incorporate some sort of physical excersize in your day. Trauma can interrupt your body's equilibrium, so giving your body an outlet to release some endorphins and burn off some adrenaline can help you repair the damage. Even something as basic as going for a walk may have many natural medicinal benefits (Robinson, 2022).
- Refrain from isolating yourself and keeping thoughts internalized. In order to overcome trauma, an individual must come face to face with it. Although it may sound cheesy to some, going to rehabilitation groups may help an individual feel less alone. Knowing that others have gone through similar, or completely different, forms of trauma can ease one's mind. There is an equal benefit for all members who participate, and who knows, you may meet new friends, just like how Hazel met Gus in the movie, The Fault In Our Stars (Robinson, 2022).
- When you recognize your body becoming more tense, or your breathing begin to speed up, it is important to try and control it. Focusing on the "in and out" of your breathing, try to identify the senses: something you can smell, touch, taste, see... In general, try to remain grounded. The methods will be subjective to all, however, as long as it is a healthy coping mechanism (Robinson, 2022).
- Take care of yourself, give your body the basic needs. Make sure you are getting enough quality rest/sleep, avoid the use of drugs or alcohol to cope, try to give your body the appropriate nutrition, and try to keep things calm (Robinson, 2022). One thing that has worked for me in the past is designating a portion of my morning to me. I gave myself 30 minutes (so I would never be in a rush) to make a cup of tea and sit with myself, whether that was to music, catching up on reading, or what ever felt right. I can confirm that it can have quite a positive and effective impact on one's life.
