Each year people in the United states throw out more than 230 million tons of garbage. That is an average of about 2 kilograms (4.5 pounds) per person each day. Figuring out what to do with so much waste in a huge problem. Most of the waste is buried in landfills. Burying it get rid of the trash but can create other problems.
paper is one of the easiest things to recycle. Some kinds of paper that are recycled are newspaper, cardboard, and paper that is used in offices. Newspaper that is recycled is mixed with hot water and turned into pulp. This pulp is mixed with a chemical that remove ink. The pulp is then made into new paper.
About two-thirds of the metal called steel can be recycled. Some scraps of steel are melted in furnaces and formed into sheets. The sheets can be used in making new cars, cans, and machines.
About two-thirds of aluminum drink cans are reused. The cans are crushed and then shredded and melted. They can be made into large sheets from which new cans can be shaped.
About one-third of all glass is recycled. Almost all of this comes from used glass contains such as jars and bottles. The glass is sorted by colour into clear, brown and, green piles. Then it is melted and made into new glass items.
A small amount of plastic is reused. plastic is harder to recycle than paper, steel, or glass. Seven kinds of plastic are used to make household items, and each kind must be recycled separately. A number on the bottom of each plastic item tells what kind of plastic it is made of. Used plastic can be cleaned, shredded into flakes, and then melted and formed into small pieces. These pieces can be used to make new things.
Recycling is a good way to get rid of waste. Researchers are constantly looking for new, less expensive ways to recycle.
