Chemical Reactions (Group Task)
Definition
a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as distinct from a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
In Our Terms:
Anika : Chemicals reactions is a process one or more substances, are converted to one or more different substances due to the rearrangement in the molecular structure of the substance
Sravanthi: A different physical form or nuclear reaction presented due to the rearrangement of molecular or ionic structure of a substance.
Sharvan: Chemical Reactions is the process which includes combinations of the molecular or ionic structure. There can be many different combinations!
Displacement
Single Replacement: (
The Cheater
) One element knocks another element out of its compound.
Example
: AB + X ➡ AX + B
Double Replacement: (
The Swap
) Two compounds switch ions with each other.
Example
: AB + XY ➡ AX + BY
Types of Chemical Reactions
Synthesis
What is it: It is also called the Get-Together because two or more chemical bond to form a new substance
A + B ➡ AB
(Reactants - Substance) yields (Products - Ending Substance)
Example
2Na + Cl2 = 2NaCl
2CO + O2 = 2CO2
3H2 + N2 = 3NH2
Decomposition
Decomposition reactions are processes in which chemical substances break up into simpler parts.
AB ➡ A + B
Example
Water breaking down to hydrogen and oxygen
Combustion
Combustion is a reaction of a fuel with an oxidant to give out heat. The release of heat can produce light in the form of a flame.
Fuel + O2 → CO2 + H2O
Example
When a match is lit When a match is struck, friction heats the head to a temperature at which the chemicals react and generate more heat than can escape into the air, and they burn with a flame.
