Doing a research project
.
What do you need to do an investigation project?
.
You will need
To select a topic.
Identify the objectives of your study.
Plan and design a suitable methodology.
Devise research instruments.
Negotiate acces to
Instutions.
Material.
People.
Collect, analyse and present information.
And finally, produce a well-written report.
The undertaking, techniques have to be mastered and a plan of action devised.
which does not attempt more than
The limitations of expertise.
Time.
Access permit.
Selecting a topic
Your discussions and inquiries will help you to select a topic which is likely to be of your interest
The aim is not only ‘to know facts and to understand relations for the sake of knowledge. We want to know and understand in order to be able to act and act “better” than we did before’ (Langeveld 1965)
You will in all cases be
Required to
analyse and evaluate the information you collect
In a position to suggest desirable changes
in practice.
Getting started about your ideas
You may have several ideas, all equally
interesting. Write them down
Talk with collegues about your initial ideas
Try to bring the list down to a possible two
One likely to be of
main interest.
The second to fall back on if your preliminary
investigations throw up problems.
To write
down your ideas on a sheet of paper
Write your idea in the middle of the paper
Brainstorm it
Insert arrows, if necessary, to link one idea or query with another
Consider your priorities
Draw together the various items
on your first and second thoughts charts into a list of questions on your selected topics
Eliminating overlaps or rejects
The order and wording are not important
The purpose of the study
Start with the purpose of the study
It’s rather important to
know why you want to carry out this research
Ask yourself questions and make a note of
any prompts about the likely sub questions.
Each question raises other issues. Ask yourself:
Why do I need this information and how will I find it?
Which institutions/faculties/departments/groups are to be included in this investigation?
Need to ask supervisor’s advice about text how text
to go about obtaining permission
Has any research been done already on this topic?
Be critical.
The purpose
of this is study is . . . what?
Hypotheses, objectives and researchable questions
Hypotheses
"A tentative proposition which is subject to verification
through subsequent investigation it may also been seen as the guide to the researcher in that it depicts and describes the
method to be followed in studying the problem"... (Verma and Beard,1981)
Hypotheses make statements about relations between variables and provide a guide to the researcher as to how the original hunch
might be tested.
Working title and the project outline
Select a working title
Think once more about
Are you clear about the purpose of the study?
Have you decided on the focus of the study?
You’ve been through all your key questions?
Are you sure about it?
You’ve been through all your key questions
You have not yet begun to consider how you might obtain this
information
All personal needs, responsabilities and commitments need to be taken into account in your time plan.
Timing
The time is reduced
Devise a schedule so that you
can check progress periodically.
Force yourself to
move from one stage of the research to the next
It is particularly important to produce a list or a chart indicating the
stage at which all data should have been collected, analysed and drafts produced.
You have to work
to the date specified by the institution
Supervision
We need a supervisor in whom
we have
confidence
we can share our thinking
Is willing
to advise and to give an honest view about our drafts
