What are some of the different types of traditional stories and how do they differ?
Fable
These are fictional stories that feature animals, objects and others given human qualities. Fables are told to show and teach a moral which is a lesson from how these characters have acted.
These can be in a verse or short story
Parable
These can be in a verse or short story
This is a story that tells one or more lessons or morals. This differs from a fable, as parables are known to only tell human characters. Parables can be around Jesus and the teachings of Christ, but that is only the common role these have.
Fairytale
This is a short story
Fairy tales usually feature some sort of mythical creatures or people with extraordinary powers. Fairy tales are like fables where their intention is to provide a moral and lesson with the plot.
Fairy tales are known to usually have happy endings where everything that is a complication in the plot all gets resolved easily and everything is peaceful at the end.
Fairy tales can sometimes then be called legends if they might have actually happened
Legend
A legend is a story that can be perceived that it actually took place in history, with the stories usually wanting you to believe so. They can include miracles and known beliefs.
There may be multiple versions of legends, as the story teller aim is to keep the moral, but also to make it seem real and believable at all times.
Oral tradition
This is a cultural tradition where a story is transmitted through speech or vocals from one generation/ancestor or person to the other. This means that oral traditions don't have to have a writing system like other types of stories, and some types might even be passed down through oral ways.
