Special Education Process
Identify struggling student
Try different strategies
Gather evidence via observations, grading
Talk to other teachers, bring in others to observe
Meet with parents and discuss life at home, evidence, etc.
Discuss plan to have child evaluated
Evaluation
IEP Meeting
Hold meeting with all involved to outline strategies, goals and time-line
Services are provided and measured over an agreed amount of time.
Another meeting and the IEP reviewed
Child is reevaluated
See if the child continues to be "Child with disability" and what their education needs are.
Every 3 years unless asked by parents
At least once a year to discuss improvements or worries.
Have evidence to support improvements
Discuss home life and parents expectations
Constant communication with parents about meeting education goals and targets.
Implement strategies
Small groups with children with similar learning styles
Provide different materials and levelled books
Discuss learning expectations with students
Extra teacher if needed for support and guidance and create a support network
Classroom environment changes
Independent time and study groups
Regular meetings with classroom teachers on how strategies are working and if any changes should be made (feedback to parents)
Discuss behavioural expectations
Eligibility, does the child have any known disabilities
Discuss if child is struggling at home
Start building relationship with parents
