Types of Assessments
Assessment for Learning (formative assessment)
Exit Ticket: check for understanding as students leave a lesson. Questions must summarize learning, assess understanding, and help future learning. Tools: G-forms, Socrative, Plicker, post-it notes, quiziz.com, surveymonkey.
RSQC2: recall, summary, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis exercises focusing on a previous class session
3-2-1 - Here, each student states 3 things you found out, 2 interesting things, and 1 question you still have. This can be modified into any 3-2-1 questions to meet the requirement of any subject.
Flip: Teachers create videos/use existing ones that has content and embed MCQs, open-ended questions. Students watch and respond. Teacher addresses common misconceptions, targeted teaching. Tools: Edpuzzle,Playposit.
Small whiteboards: Students write their responses to a question.

"Summative assessment aims to evaluate student learning and academic achievement at the end of a term, year or semester by comparing it against a universal standard or school benchmark."

Why use Summative Assessment?
To sort students into ability level groups.
Keeps a yearly/unit based summary of data.
Can highlight common gaps in student understanding - leading to possible developments in the curriculum.
Clearer and more observable statistics on improvement within student achievement,.
Offers highly specific evidence of academic achievement .
[FLAW] Can encourage short term information retention i.e. students will cram information knowing they may only be assessed once a year/term.
How can we make Summative Assessments more fair?
Blind marking - Remove bias by hiding the students names when marking Assessments.
End of Year Coursework - Allow for regular submissions and edits throughout the year before a final submission.
Make instructions and questions clear and simple - use real world examples relevant to the students level and surroundings.
Give the students the marking rubric before the assessment and allow them to view it during the assessment.
Provide alternatives for struggling/ESL/Lower ability students i.e. Create a video, podcast, story summarising a topic they are interested in related to the aims of the Unit.
Formative Assessment

Definition
Formative Assessments aim to gauge student knowledge during a lesson rather than to summarise knowledge at the end of a unit. Formative Assessment can often be informal i.e. a Q&A session with students, group discussions, etc. The focus is on assessing students progress daily throughout the year, rather than in one lump sum at the end of the year.
"Formative assessment helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. It also helps educators and governors recognise where students are struggling and address problems immediately."

How can we make Formative Assessments Student-Centred?
1 - Begin with a quiz.
2 - Conduct a poll after a quiz, ask questions such as was the quiz challenging, which questions were the most difficult etc.
3 - Use the information gathered in the poll to begin a class discussion - how can we improve on areas we struggled in? Why did we struggle? etc.
4 - Have each student create their own 3-step process on how to find answers in future.

Assessment as Learning
Self-create assessment : Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. Eg: Create a fun Kahoot for a recently finished unit.
Give students rubric for an assessment and make them self-assess or peer-assess
Co-create learning goals and experiences with students.
Assessment of Learning
Standardized testing - provides evidence of learning to wider community and outside parties like universities
Summative tasks - used to plan future learning goals and pathways.

Performance assessments measure how well students can apply the knowledge or skills they acquired to an authentic or "real world" problem. This type of assessment requires students to
produce
something, guided by specific scoring criteria.
Educators find this type of assessment useful because students are required to produce a
unique response
to the content they have learned. Many experts also believe that this type of assessment teaches 21st century skills, as it requires collaboration and encourages higher-order thinking skills.
Performance Event:
an assessment where students are given little or no time to prepare, and are usually done informally within a class period.
Examples could include: class debates, class discussions, or an "About Me" presentation.
Performance Task:
An assessment where students have days, weeks or months to prepare an assignment.

Student portfolios:
students compile examples of their work throughout a unit or term. These are usually interdisciplinary (for example essays, creative projects, or presentations) and an also be taken from everyday classroom tasks.
Websites like SeeSaw have a built-in portfolio function that allows students to collect and display their work throughout a unit.

Diagnostic Assessments are assessments
for
learning; they provide a "snapshot" of what students already know, and/or their strengths and their weaknesses in a subject area. Diagnostic Assessments are a type of formative assessment, and can give you critical information you need to adjust your teaching style, classroom management, or student assignments to fit students' needs.
Diagnostic Assessments are primarily used to diagnose student difficulty and guide curriculum planning.
