"By almost any meaningful measure, the 25 communities1 in the Canadian territory of Nunavut are remote, food insecure, and their residents, predominately Inuit.2 face high food prices. Three points exemplify the matter: (1) None of the 25 communities are connected by road to each other, hence, they rely mainly on air-transportation for food which is flown, on average, 2000 km (Canada, 2018); (2) Approximately half (50.8%) of households in Nunavut are identified as food insecure (Statistics Canada, 2017); (3) Food prices in Nunavut are, on average, 2.2 times as expensive as anywhere else in Canada" (Naylor, Deaton, and Ker, 2020)
