What To Do
Read the italicised information about the extract
Rule off the sections each questions refers to, breifly reading the Q's
Read the extract underlining very short or one word quotations as evidence for answers to each question
Identify evidence from the beginning, middle and end of the section or extract; track through the text
The focus is on HOW characters, tension, interest is created with WHAT content and HOW words have effect
20 minutes on reading and the first two questions / 12 minutes each on questions 3-5
Section B
Features
Realistic events expressed coherently
Use words from the Q in the story
Narrative progresses in each sentence
Clear tone of voice or attitude - speak from a specific character perspective
Character is created through dialogue and symbols, description, emotions, flashback
Each sentence is varied: length, opening structure for a specific effect
Vocabulary is varied: semantic fields used for effect/tension; avoid repetition
Dialogue is used accurately, or not at all
Descriptive moments, imagery is used to develop detail (focus remains on story)
Clear sense of beginning, middle, end (story structure) - what changes
Accurate spelling, punctuation, grammar, tenses, paragraphing
Structure
Non-Chronological Structure:
In Medias Res - Start your story in the middle of the action (dramatic heart of the story / describe the moment and the setting)
Analepsis - A flashback to earlier - develop the characters, their intentions and emotions
Tension / Conflict - Build up towards a climatic moment
Cliffhanger / Conclusion - Change things, juxtapose past and present
Chronological structure:
Beginning - develop the characters, their intentions and emotions
Middle - Tension / Conflict - Build up towards a climatic moment
End - Cliffhanger / Conclusion - Change things, juxtapose past and present
Tips
Write the title for your choice of Question
Use precise, specific detail e.g. Her blonde, curled hair danced in the wind
Use an object symbolically e.g. The fire crackled and burnt as my anger grew
Use realistic dialogue; don't overuse 'said' e.g. "How is it going?" she murmured
KISS! - the story should be coherent and have a shape (progress and develop)
Be sophisticated in your emotional content and character depth
Focus on narrative and character development
Focus on accurate and controlled sentences
