Black people in particular have faced significant racial barriers in sports, and the fight is still ongoing. In 1958, when Willie O'Ree stepped on the ice for the Boston Bruins in a game against the Montreal Canadiens, he became the first Black player in NHL history, over 40 years after the league's founding, which is far too long. Throughout his career, he faced racial abuse from fans, players, and coaches which we still see many players face today.
