Diatoms
-
-
-
Diatoms have shells with two halves. One half fits inside the other, forming a box.
-
-
Diatoms store their food as oil, which is a nutritious food source for other marine life. The oil also helps diatoms float close to the surface, where they can absorb energy from the Sun.
When diatoms die their silicon shells fall to the ocean floor, and their sediment is known as ditomaceous earth. It can be collected and used as an abrasive and filtering agent.

Euglenoids
-
-
Are found in shallow freshwater, although some live in saltwater.
-
-
-
-
When light is unavailable for photosynthesis, some absorb dissolved nutrients from their environments.
