        There is a trade-off between computing power & power consumption
        
        Devices aren't as powerful as they could be if battery size or power were not an issue
        
        We never quite make it through the day without running out of power

    - - Mobile (or even wearable technologies)
        
        The term 'mobile' refers to something that doesn't need to remain in one place or attached to wired connections
        
        'Wearable' refers to technologies that you wear on your body instead of carrying them around in pocket or bag
      - Convergent
        
        Miniaturization has allowed smartphones & tablets to become devices that include the functionality of many mobile devices
      - Powerful
        
        Smartphones & tablets include multi-core, 64bit CPUs
      - always connected
        
        Always able to communicate in many different ways & access for more data than you have storage for
        
        Whether WiFi or cellular data it will always be connected to internet
      - always on
        
        Makes them fast & responsive
        
        Never off - always working in background
  - - - Laptop is the first mobile technology
      - Can easily attach a 3G modem to allow connectivity even where there's no WiFi signal
      - Allowing you to work anywhere with an internet connection
      - Manufacturers created very low-power, low-spec machines called Netbooks
      - Netbooks are just powerful enough to do basic tasks like web browsing, e-mail
      - Disadvantages of Laptops
        
        Not always 'on'
        
        No built-in cellular data
        
        Battery life too short to be useful as mobile
        
        Size too large to be conveniently carried around
      - Advantages
        
        Powerful CPU (can run all normal computer applications)
        
        Full-scale operating system
        
        Expandable (can use any huge range of existing computer peripherals)
    - - Disadvantages
        
        Mobile operating system cannot run the full-scale productivity apps as on PC or Mac
        
        Input can be difficult
        
        Not easily expandable with peripherals
      - Advantages
        
        Convergence device
        
        Always 'on' (no boot or load time)
        
        Always connected - built-in cellular data
        
        Small size - ultra portable
        
        Longer battery life - compared to laptop
        
        Built-in sensors
    - - They don't include the phone function
      - Longer battery life than Laptops
      - They have larger screens & bigger keyboards than smartphones
      - All tablet have the same disadvantages as smartphones
      - Tablet with mobile operating system can not run full desktop software
      - Tablets that do run full desktop operating system have the same physical problems as a laptop
    - - Fall into two categories:
        
        Tablet-based designs
        
        Devices that allow for full, color, multimedia experience & are theoretically able to run other software
        
        Single-purpose designs
        
        Dedicated e-readers. They are excellent for displaying text but aren't at all suited to movies, photos, etc. They're also low powered & don't run other software
      - Advantages
        
        Cheaper than tablet or smartphones
        
        Smaller & lighter than tablet
        
        Longer battery life (weeks)
        
        Easy to read in sunlight (not as good in darkness)
      - Disadvantages
        
        Single-purpose device
        
        An extra item to carry around
- - - - Speed
        
        Bigger is Better
        
        A higher speed means the CPU can process more instructions in same amount of time
      - Cores
        
        More is better
        
        A core is a whole complete CPU on the chip, so a 2 core unit has 2 CPUs on the same chip
        
        It's important because each CPU can be working on separate programs at the same time
  - - - This transfer takes place over various different 'buses'
        
        Speed is shown by the MHz or GHz speed of bus & number of lanes (or channels) in bus system
  - - - The speed & number of processing cores on the GPU chip
      - The speed of its communication with the motherboard
      - The speed & amount of memory on the card
