Loss
Not only Nisha and Amil however, every character in the book lost their mother who set the story. The loss of the mother changed their lives severely, and Nisha contacts her mother through writing diary entries, the consistency of the diary entries determines upon what Nisha is going through since if she is struggling she will write every single day however if she is not doing much or her life is going well she will not write as often thus she is using the diary as a gateway to her mother for comfort.
Loss of their home, a divide between what is now known as Pakistan and India. As they were Hindus, they had to flee Pakistan and come to India, in which trouble occurred along the way.
Loss of voice, Nisha never spoke much in the book as she was scared of sharing her oppinions to others and Amil was usally her voice, however as the book carried on she started to grow her voice although after she learned that she hurt her family after talking the the girl who lived next door to her uncle she decided to never speak again.
Trauma
Due to the impact of the divide, the main characters who fled had trauma during the walk to the other side of India, where they didnt always have acces to water,a place to sleep and basic needs.
Due to the loss of Mama, Nisha,Amil,Kazi and Papa faced trauma of her death remembering the day she died giving birth.
Leaving Kazi behind when they fled to India as Kazi was a muslim, created trauma for the whole family since he was a part of their family even if it wasnt through blood.
Hope
Nisha hopes that one day that Kazi will be able to reunite with Nisha and her family. Nisha wishes that she can talk to Kazi, because Kazi is the only one she feels confortable sharing her thoughts around. Kazi is Nisha's only friend.
Nisha hopes that her mother will be hiding in Rashid uncle's house. Nisha hopes thatshe can finally reunite with her mother, even though she knows that her mother is no more. Nisha secretly feels that her mother is always there with her, but she just yearns to see hear in person.
Nisha hopes that her mother is proud of her. Nisha needs reassurance for the things that she does. Nisha wants her mother to see everything she does. And she hopes that she is similar to her mother. She also hopes that her mother was an awesome and great person.
Curiosity
Nisha is constantly curious about the things going on in her life and about the world. Nisha wants to know everything about her and her mother. Nisha wonders about her father's feelings and how everyone has go about their life. Nisha wonders why India and Pakistan are being separated and why they need to move. Nisha is confused and wants to know about the social situation aorund her.
Nisha is curious about how her mother was, Nisha wants to know the similarities between her and her mother. She wants to walk back from school with her mother and she wants to know how it feels to have a mother. Nisha is curious if the world would be different with her mother around.
Nisha is curious about many things on her journey to Jodhpur as well. Nisha wonders why Kazi could not go with them and how he had to be left behind. Nisha wonders why Hafa's brothers went out of their way to kick out Hindus and Sikhs. Nisha wonders why they had to be secret while living with Rashid uncle.
Memories
The night diary was a important book to Nisha since she was writiing it to her mother who passed long ago. She tries to recreate memories that she doesn't remember as they are stories told to her by Papa, Kazi and Dadi. Most importantly, Nisha is trying to make her mother real and tires to give her characteristics and looks.
