- Referring to two of the works you have studied, discuss both how and why the text invites the reader to identify with situations, characters and/or ideas.
-
TS: How
SAME 2. as a memoir/ diary style from a first person perspective (diff: Persep = speech bubbles and narration boxes). SUBJECTIVE OPINION
-
DIFFERENT 1. flashback, but Persepolis depicts coming-of-age
--> same effect (character development)
-
CONCLUSION
SAME: these two works are both written from a subjective perspective in the style of memoir which make the readers feel personalized and see the themes/problems presented in the works as their own problems. This is further intensified by constant parallels to real world in these two works because they remind them that they could easily end up with situations of the two female protagonists.
Handmaid's Tale has constant flashbacks that help character development which makes the readers sympathize with the protagonist. Although Persepolis is written in a chronological order, because it depicts the coming-of-age since the protagonist was in primary school until she is in her 20s, it still develops her individuality/personality that helps the readers identify with the situations of the protagonist.
DIFFERENT: Persepolis is a graphic novel which makes it easier for the readers to visually understand what the protagonist is thinking/feeling and this makes it easier for them to sympathize with her.
-
TS: Why
because the authors want their readers to see the problems presented in their works as their own problems by reading from a subjective perspective
