Higher Order
Anticipation
Thinking about a problem and how to solve it before it actually arises, eg. job interview questions
Compensation
Focusing on being successful in one area of life to try compensate for the unsatisfactory acheivement in another area
Displacement
Transferring negative thoughts from one area of life to another, eg. stressful day at work and coming home and behaving negatively towards family
Humour
In an effort to combat negative emotions or reality you turn to humour to try and take the attention off of the negative/uncomfortable reality
Intellctualisation
When someone begins over-thinking, creating a mental barrier between them and their real and normal emotions
Isolation of affect
Avoiding the experience that caused a certain emotion that was created from a person, thing or situation. For example someone describing the day their house burnt down using straights facts, while displaying no emotion
Rationalisation
Justifying of one's poor behaviour through a rational explanation, example stealing money from someone who doesn't need it as much as you do
Reaction formation
When someone replaces their natural, initial thought on something to avoid embarrassment, discomfort etc, with the opposite thought, for example saying "ew" when your friend says you like a girl
Sexualisation
Associating the sexual aspects of one's experience of certain people, places, objects or ideas
Sublimation
Transferring your emotions into another aspect of society or life, that is considered to be more normal/useful, eg. using your anger from life as motivation in sports

Denial
Dismissing external reality and focussing on internal escape routes to avoid the uncomfortable reality of a situation

Identification
Reproduction of behaviour without being consciously aware of it, for example a child copying their parents behaviour
Projection
Accusing someone else of the same poor behaviour they have, for example showing little interest in a relationship, then accusing their partner of showing little interest in them

Repression
Adapting their behaviour to old habits during a different developing stage, for example a stressful event occurs and you start wetting the bed again

Splitting
Failing to reconcile both positive and negative things into a person or situation and therefore creating an "all-or-nothing" thinking style
