Input, Output and Storage devices
Output
Speakers
-
The output from speakers can disturb others who are trying to work. High quality external speakers can be expensive.
+
Everyone in the room can hear the output from the computer. They can help create an atmosphere or ambiance to accompany a presentation. They help blind people to use the computer because text can be converted into sound.
printers (Laser)
-
Toner cartridges are expensive to buy (though cost per page cheaper than inkjet). Can be very large and bulky. Produce shiny images. More suited to text printing
+
Cheaper printing costs. Ideal for high-volume printing. Printed output is good quality. Fast printouts - faster than ink-jet or dot-matrix. Cost per page is low - cheaper than ink-jet or dot-matrix.
3D Printer
-
Printers are not fast enough. Cost of Buying and setting up a 3D printer is very high. Large scale adoption of 3D printing will result in significant job loss
+
Single step manufacture. Speed - Saves time and money at the initial product development. Greater creativity. Reduced overhead costs. Better Quality
Storage
hard disc drive (HDD)
+
Necessary to support the way your computer works. Large storage capacity. Stores and retrieves data much faster than a floppy disk or CD/DVD. Stored items are not lost when you switch off the computer
-
Far slower to access data than ROM or RAM chips. Hard disks can crash which stop the computer from working. Regular crashes can damage the surface of the disk, leading to loss of data in that sector
solid state drive (SSD)
+
The SSD drive is faster. The SSD drive has no moving parts. It uses flash memory to store data, which provides better performance and reliability over an HDD. The SSD uses less power than a standard HDD, which means a lower energy bill over time and for laptops an increase of battery life.
-
Very expensive - The biggest disadvantage of a solid state drive is the cost. Recovery of Lost Data: The inability to recover old data is one of the biggest disadvantages of a SSD. Some of the solid state drives can be written only for a limited number of times.
Input
Microphone
+
Wireless microphones allow ease of movement for performers. They reduce the chance
of tripping. Can be used with voice recognition software
-
Wireless microphones have limited range and limited battery life. Stored audio files can take up a lot of memory. Voice commands can be difficult to recognise by the software.
Mouse
-
Drawings are captured digitally therefore no need to scan them in. Drawings can be edited almost immediately. A great level of accuracy can be achieved
+
User can quickly and intuitively navigate to required area on screen. Allows user to select options without having to use the keyboard buttons. Very useful device for those with learning difficulties. Usually supplied as part of a new computer system
graphics digitiser
+
Unsuitable for entering large amounts of data. Excessive use can lead to health problems such as repetitive strain injury (R.S.I.) A clear, flat area is needed to use mouse effectively.
-
Pens can be inaccurate. Equipment can be expensive. Not really suitable for general selection work such as pointing and clicking on menu items
touch screens
-
Not suitable for inputting large amounts of data. Not very accurate - selecting detailed objects can be difficult with fingers. Tiring to use for long periods
+
Easy to use - intuitive, don't need much training. No extra peripherals such as a mouse are needed. Software can alter the screen while it is being used, making it more flexible than a concept keyboard which has a permanent overlay.
