Edna ends up dying, though she may not have had a wake if they did not find her body.

People in the water would leave a wake.

This book is "woke" because of its status as a landmark feminist commentary on gender roles.
I don't think this was the intended meaning, because "woke" used ike this is pretty new, but it's an interesting connection.
