Tactics For Identifying Struggling Students
Student performs well in the classroom and in their assignments
Student keeps this up throughout the semester
Ensure student is praised in parents meetings and monthly grade level staff meetings
Student begins to struggle as the semester progresses and work gets harder
Talk to the student, and find out where the problem is
Student denies their is an issue
Talk to their counsellor and if necessary ask for the parents to come to school
Keep an eye on the student and see if their grades / attitude improves
Student explains the issue, differentiate where necessary
NOTE:
For G11 students the issue often seems to be time management with AP/TOEFL/SAT/IELTS exams - so allow more time with assignments if necessary
Student struggles in class from the beginning of the semester
Talk to the student to see what the issue is
Student shows disinterest in the subject
Explain the importance of the subject to their future
same step
Why Take IELTS
Student offers no explanation for their struggles
Contact student counsellor to see what the issue is
If necessary sit down with counsellor and student to see what the issue is without language barrier
Offer tutoring to the student to help them get to grips with the materials
Keep an eye on the student to see if issue resolved
If no improvement
same step
Contact counsellor again, and this time ask for the parents to come to school
Raise the issue in the monthly grade level meeting to see if it an issue with other teacher
If yes - discuss with counsellor and other teachers during the meeting to formulate an action plan
If no
same step
Reasons students struggle in my classroom
IELTS
NOTE:
This is a compulsory course
Material is too hard
Differentiate the tasks in the class so lower level students are improving as much as higher level ones
Students can not focus in class
same step
AP European History
NOTE:
This is an elective course
Due to the nature of this being an elective course, if students are struggling they generally choose to drop out and take an different elective during the first few weeks
Student is struggling after the deadline to switch classes
Discuss the issue with the student - and offer help/tutoring where necessary
G11 English Literature
NOTE:
This is a compulsory course
Students lack interest in the subject
Talk to the student and explain how Literature skills transfer directly to subjects they value more AP/TOEFL
Keep an eye on the student to see if their attitude changes
Importance of Literature
The reading material is too hard for them
Encourage them to trans-language
As long as the output is in English it is acceptable
Translanguaging in the classroom
Student does not attend class regularly
Student makes contact and keeps up with the classwork remotely
Grade their work appropriately, but make it clear that 5% of their GPA is participation and they cannot get any of that without being in the classroom
Student does not make contact and misses more than one class in a week
Contact the student's counsellor to see what the issue is
If possible make contact with the student and send them classwork to do remotely
Same step
If student cannot work remotely - inform head of department and prepare make up work for when they return to school
