Geography Key words Chapter 20.
Ageing population
- of older people is increasing. This is also known as 'demographic ageing' and 'population ageing'. The size and proportion of the global population as relates to age over time.
Brie
- In this pays, clay soils occur. This soil produced good pasture land. Farmers here are dairy producers famous for cheese (
Brie cheese
) and butter.
Competitive clusters
- are groups of small, medium and large companies, research laboratories and training institutions. French government has designated certain areas of Paris Basin as
competitive clusters
to encourage economic development.
Cosmetic Valley
- is a centre for many businesses in the cosmeics industry from growing aromatic plants, creating and formulating products, manufacturing perfumes amd cosmetics, control, testing and analysis laboratories, advertising and design and packaging.
Intensive commercia farming
- is where a large amount of produce is generated from a relatively small area of land. Inputs will be high to achieve a high yield per hectare. Inputs could be either fertilisers, machines or labour.
Maritime climate
- occurs in regions whose climatic characteristics are conditioned by their position close to a sea or an ocean.
The Paris Basin in west of region, maritime climate has cool summers (16 degrees) and mild (5 degrees) winters.
Pays
- a number of distinctive farming region. Pays have developed based mainly on the soil on the soil and rock types of the region.The dominant soil type of the Paris Basin is a thick layer of fertile, stoneless limon soil. Limon is a stoneless deposit that was blown southwards by northerly winds during and after the Ice Age.
Route focus/nodal point
- is a point where two routes, such as roads, railroads, valleys or rivers meet. Bridging points, gap towns and ports can also be considered as nodal points. Route Centers are the focus of routs (Roads and rivers).
