If you consume a food or drink contaminated with Salmonella Typhi or Salmonella Paratyphi, the bacteria can multiply and spread into the bloodstream, causing typhoid fever or paratyphoid fever.

Wash your hands. Frequent hand-washing in hot, soapy water is the best way to control infection.
Avoid using untreated water. Contaminated drinking water is a problem in areas where typhoid fever is common.

There are two vaccines to prevent typhoid fever. One is an inactivated (killed) vaccine and the other is a live, attenuated (weakened) vaccine
