Unit 8: Cardiovascular System Lauren Palla, Period 6
-
Vital Signs
Vital signs include: pulse, BP, respiratory rate, body temperature
-
Blood Pressure (BP)- force per unit exerted in wall of blood vessel by blood; measure as systemic arterial BP in large arteries (near heart)
Measuring BP: systemic arterial BP is measured indirectly by auscuitatory methods using a sphygmomanometer (based on detection of Korotkoff sounds)

-
Layers of the Heart
-
-
Endocardium- innermost layer; is continuous with endothelial lining of blood vessels (lines heart chambers)
Disorders
-
Homeostatic Imbalances
Myocardial Infarction (heart attack)- prolonged coronary blockage; areas of cell death are repaired with noncontractile scar tissues
-
-
Erythrocyte Disorders
Anemia- blood has abnormally low O2-carrying capacity, too low to support normal metabolism
Symptoms: fatigue, pallor, dyspnea, chills
Causes: blood loss, not enough RBCs being produced, too many RBCs detroyed
Blood Loss
Chronic Hemorrhagic Anemia- slight but persistent blood loss (ex. hemorrhoids, bleeding ulcer)
-
-
Too Many RBCs Destroyed
Thalassemias- one globin chain is absent/ faulty' RBCs are thin, delicate, and deficient in hemoglobin
-
ABO, Rh Blood Types
ABO group has four different possibilities: A, B, AB, and O
Blood Type: AB-
-
-
Receives: AB-, A-, B-, O-
-
-
-
Blood Type: O+
Gives to: O+, A+, B+, AB+

Blood Type: A-

Major Blood Vessels
Inferior Vena Cava- returns blood from body regions below diaphragm; enters the right atrium though the middle of the posterior side of the heart
Superior Vena Cava- returns blood from body regions above the diaphragm; enters the right atrium at a superior angle
-
Pulmonary Trunk- consists of pulmonary arteries that enter the right ventricle diagonally; carries deoxygenated blood
