Jija Bai, his mother and Dadaji Kondadev, his tutor shaped the life of Shivaji.

In 1663, he sent Shaista Khan to capture him.
One night, Shivaji with a few soldiers entered the Mughal
camp and wounded Shaista Khan.

While still young, he put together a small army.
Using guerilla warfare, he captured many forts near Pune.

In 1674, Shivaji crowned himself king.

He died in 1680, leaving behind a powerful kingdom.

Shivaji's administration
Shivaji was not only a fearless soldier but also successful administrator. He had a council of eight ministers, called the ashtapradhan,to advise him. The word comes from Sanskrit and means 'important eight'. These eight ministers were as follows:
- Peshwa (head of the council and incharge of general administration)
- Nyayadhish (incharge of justice)
- Amatya or Majumdar (incharge of finance)
- Pant Sachiv (General Secretary)
- Senapati (commander-in-chief of the army)
