Scatter Plots
Direction
The direction of the relationship shown on a scatter plot can be described as either positive or negative.
-
-
Normally, the right delineates positive direction and the left delineates negative direction
Direction implies which side the trend is going, right or left, and which side it's going, upwards or downwards.
Strength
The strength of the relationship between the two variables can be described as weak, moderate or strong.
If the points are somewhat creating a straight line, however some points are out of order. This relationship of a scatter plot would be labeled moderate.
If the points create an extremely organized and close-to-perfect straight line. This relationship of a scatter plot would be strong.
If the points are nowhere close to creating a line, as they don’t seem to be following a pattern. This relationship of a scatter plot would be weak.
Strong
This means that the relationship between the x and y-axis is inversely proportional and the gradient is dependent on the relationship between the two variables. That means that if the relationship is strong, then the slope would be consistent.
